Uncharted Seas

Or was it? This short sequence is a preparatory drawing for a new graphic story I'm working on about a Scottish herring fishing family (the cast of characters can be found here). The story itself will be in black and white, but I wanted to experiment a little in colour...on the evidence of the first wash I was ready to cast the drawing into the ocean, however its proof to me at at least, that it's worth seeing things through to their conclusion.

A three page preview of The Bearded Detective - a slice of silver-screen Noir, set in present day Kentish Town, written by Chris Bye with artwork by myself. The first part is planned for mid 2011 (once I've completed a couple of other projects) and stars Stanley Nicholas. He's a very fine detective, but despite his best efforts is more Prince Philip than Philip Marlowe when it comes to wise talking.

The Good, the Bad and the Indifferent

A quick college project in which we had to draw 30 - 40 faces, on A1 paper. Inspired by the school tea-towels of old, studded with crudely rendered faces, I drew friends, family and other folk from memory, straight onto the paper with pen and ink. Consequently some faces are good, others I'd make sure I used to scrub encrusted casserole dishes.

There are a few famous faces, a prize to anyone that can spot, Roger Sterling, Batman, Dave Mustaine and the guy that came at me and my three pals with our own skate boards c.15 years ago.

A drawing of Batman, inspired by Lewis Wilson's Batman of the 1943 serial, a forgotten time when figure-enhancing latex suits were just a figment of the imagination.

Fishermen of Dunure

The cast of characters for a graphic story about the fisher-folk of Dunure - a tiny village on the east coast of Scotland...set to be drawn, just as soon as I can write the script.

"Now bring us some figgy pudding"

The bright penny is left  amongst the crumbs of the pudding in this Dickensian Christmas - Great Expectations, which I'm gradually reading, undoubtedly played its role in this soon to be Christmas card. The thumbnail above may look a little blurred, this is due to some experimentation with a toy theatre style technique, take a look at the image at full size and all will be well.

Dennis Severs' House from memory

A quick sketch from memory of the opulent feast to be found in "The Eating Parlour" of Dennis Severs' House. In no way does this capture the richness of the setting. It's well worth a visit to this remarkable house, which charts in ten rooms the waining fortunes of the Jervis family of silk weavers (not recommended on an empty stomach).
